Insight: Micha Bar-Am's Israel
The exhibition Insight: Micha Bar-Am's Israel will be opened at the Berlin-based Willy-Brandt-House on March 31, and at the Open Museum for Photography in Tel Hai, Israel, on April 9, 2011. This comprehensive retrospective about the Magnum-photographer Micha Bar-Am in a co-operation between the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V. and the Open Museums Israel. Starting in summer 2011, this exhibition will start to travel through Germany and Europe under the auspices of Magnum Photos.
Micha Bar-Am is one of the pioneers of photography in Israel. Born Michael Anguli in Berlin in 1930, Bar-Am and his family fled Germany for Palestine when he was six years old. Thus, the city of Berlin - as the opening venue of the exhibition in Europe – is of special symbolic importance.
Micha Bar-Am’s biography is closely intertwined with the central theme of his images: the fascinating complexity of life in the Middle East. Curating this retrospective it is essential to me to integrate his reflections and commentaries into the exhibition concept. Micha Bar-Am is a witness to a whole era - he lives and works in Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv.
This project is being realized with the help of the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie, the Foreign Minstry (Berlin), as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Jerusalem), Dan Hotels, Fattal Hotels, Rich Foundation and others.
