Boris Carmi – Photographs from Israel

I met Boris Carmi in 2000 at the Café Silberstein in Tel Aviv. His photographic work and his character fascinated me, and I decided to make his rich body of work, mostly unknown in Germany, accessible to a wider audience. The exhibition Boris Carmi – Photographs from Israel, under the joint patronage of Johannes Rau, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Moshe Katzaw, President of the State of Israel, was on display at the Berlin based Akademie der Künste between May 15 and June 27, 2005.

Between October 12 and December 30, 2005 the exhibition was on display at the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt. The accompanying monograph Boris Carmi – Photographs from Israel, was published by Prestel. On February 14, 2005, I organized in cooperation with the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation, Israel, an event dedicated to the stories behind Carmi’s images at the Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv (Stories behind the images – An evening dedicated to the memory of Boris Carmi, 1914-2002). In the course of the conference, friends and colleagues of Boris Carmi had a chance to speak about the intriguing stories behind Boris Carmi’s images.
